Jan. 13 Points- IOM & DF95

You sure couldn’t argue about the beautiful winter day on Mission Bay! IOM and DF95 skippers participated in their first Points Series for 2024 with good numbers in each fleet. The sea breeze was just enough for each class to glide through the afternoon on a nice long course. I bit light and shifty at times.. but that’s our pond!

Chris Staiger set the marks and manned the clock for the IOM fleet. Ben Reeve directed today’s healthy DF95 fleet. These guys are volunteers and they deserve much credit for your fun today!

NOV. 18 Points- IOM & DF95

A cutoff low pressure system tried to spoil our pond sailing this weekend but sunny skies prevailed as IOM and DF 95 skippers were treated to a summer like day.. Unfortunately the wind pressure did not follow the blue sky. A very light breeze from the southwest in the 3-6 mph range prevailed most oft the day and oil slick water on the west end presented a real problem to most skippers. That being said both classes completed their 6 race series. Mostly in slow motion!

Chris Staiger set the marks and lined up a course that was suitable for the conditions and also handled the duties of Race Director for the 8 boat IOM Fleet. We appreciate your direction Chris!

By the time the DF 95 fleet had their turn on the pond the wind conditions deteriorated another notch or two. Craig Mackey stepped in as Race Director for the DF fleet and worked with the light breeze and shortened course configuration. Thank you Craig for volunteering today!

OCT.21-DF95 & IOM Points

A fantastic day greeted a nice group of skippers, on our last points event for October. DF95 and IOM fleets experienced consistent 6-10mph north west breezes that held trough out the day.

Craig-Mike

Craig Mackey was our volunteer Race Director for the DF95 fleet and managed 6 races on our standard medium course. There was some tight racing in the in the top ranks but Dennis Rogers came out on top with some beautiful sailing.

DF-95 Fleet

Chris Staiger stepped up as Race Director for the IOM fleet. The wind was favorable for long courses, so five longs and one modified (“Freddy”) medium course filled up the day. Mike Fruciano made the road trip from Arizona.. Thank you Mike for your participation! Congratulations Dennis Rogers for some very consistent sailing!

Bob Williams, once again, pushed that semi-portable grill half way around the world to serve up his specialty.. HOT DOGS!! Thank you Bob!!

Thank You Pat Nevitt for the beautiful score sheets.. YOU ROCK!! After all, scores are the meat of this post!

IOM and DF 95 skippers experienced perfect end of summer conditions for our second points event of September. The wind was onshore early with a WNW flow on our pond. Chris Staiger was our Race Director for the IOM Fleet and Gerry Wold ran the DF 95 series. Each class completed six medium course races. It was a good day of challenging and competitive sailing!

Blockbuster Turnout for the DF95 Fleet!

A HUGE starting line for twenty seven DF95’s was the image today. Likely a record number of yachts participating in a club points race! We welcome new member Jim Sears and returning local sailor Jack Kingston. Also, visiting skipper from Australia, Barry Donaher showed us some excellent pond work. We wish Kerim Baran Smooth Sailing on his new home in the Bay Area!

Greg Williams, our Race Director managed the work load with ease and deserves special recognition for an excellent day of race management. Jason Brooks assisted with score keeping on an action packed finish line.. A Standing Ovation for our volunteers!

A fairly consistent onshore breeze held through most out the day with each class completing 6 medium courses. I’d call it an excellent day on Mission Bay Model Yacht Pond!

Pat Nevitt delivered the scores! THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO!

July 15 Points-IOM & DF95

July 15 Club Points attracted a nice group of skippers eager to sample some beautiful Mission Bay summer weather. The sea breeze cooperated most of the day with fairly consistent wind in the 3-8mph range.

Chris Staiger manned our skiff and set marks to accommodate a light onshore breeze. He also served as our volunteer Race Director for our IOM fleet. During the skippers meeting crews agreed to sailing a gate, as apposed to our reaching leg, opening up more opportunities for our medium course. Good work Chris!

Mike Fruciano was our volunteer Race Director for the DF95 fleet, along with scoring assistant Ken Titilah. Thank you for your help.

Kerim Baran has been active with the San Diego Argonauts for many years as a spirited competitor In Soling 50, ODOM and DF95 fleets and has provided spectacular drone footage of many of our racing events. Kerim will be leaving the San Diego area for other adventures and will be missed on or pond. Smooth Sailing, Kerim!

JUN. 10-DF95 & IOM POINTS

San Diego Argonauts welcomed new member, Len Bose, to our group. He will be sailing IOM and DF95. We hope to see him often!

This is starting to sound like a broken record! Our June overhead is still very grey!
Despite that rather chilly detail a good group of skippers turned out for DF95 and IOM Points races. Light winds ruled our pond and in fact became lighter as the afternoon progressed. Chris Staiger set the marks and Kim Robbins managed collections while Gil scrambled back home for his missing transmitter :{ RD Gil got the DF 95 fleet on a short clock a few minutes after noon, with a mixture of 4 medium, 1 long and 1 short courses to complete six heats. Nice sailing!

Sean O’Connor was our volunteer Race Director for the IOM fleet today. Thank you Sean!

Our IOM fleet was about 5 skippers short today, as they are competing in the Region 6 Regatta in Foster City. We missed them on the starting line and wish them good luck!

Volunteers make this all possible! Lend a hand when you can!

Thank You Volunteers!

MAY20 Points-IOM/DF95

Cruising through May Gray continued..

The Argonauts had a healthy turnout of IOM & DF95 skippers despite the prevalent overcast conditions. Winds were about as predicted but came up early with a surprising consistency. Ben Reeve-RD did a fantastic job managing the fleets and kept crews on their toes with a variety of courses. It was a good day on the water if you were lucky enough to avoid our floating green paddies!

Special thanks to everyone that pitched in today! I know Bob Williams was calling sail numbers. Pat Nevitt, that is only a day out of surgery, produced these beautiful score sheets.. We appreciate your dedication and hope too see you back on the water soon! If I missed anyone that helped-I’ll do a circle for you!

We are getting good participation with our club races and volunteers staff. That said we would like to reach out for more helping hands to share the load. Don’t be shy.. It’s actually more fun when you contribute to the activities..

A Special Report from todays Race Director:

Hey all – I little regatta report from todays’ event.

All went very well today and very improved sportsmanship from all competitors.  We had 11 IOMs and 16 DF95s on the lines today.  The biggest worry was slipping and falling.  Three skippers took a fall on the slippery shore.  We really need to organize another big RAKE FEST.  I promise to bring the donuts (even though I can’t have any) if we want to set a day soon to do it.

We had fair to good wind and a number of different bullet owners today.  Pat is working on the scoring and it will be out soon I am sure.  We mixed up the courses a little to try and keep the skippers on their toes (and not their butts from slipping).  I personally want to thank Steve for getting the shed ready, David helping with the boat setup, Gil for setting the marks, Bob and Steve with help scoring, Pat for scoring totals, and Chris and Steve for boat removal and clean up.  With all of this help the day went super smooth and ended quickly.

Below are some photos from the little point and shoot camera I had at the pond last month.  Cheers! Ben

Earth Day 2023…

Looking back at our beautiful Blue Planet.. It’s a good time to stop and appreciate the fragile space we think we possess.

APR. 29 Points- DF95 & IOM

Grey weather has been dominating the coastal regions while sunny skies slowly tease their way west. Today was no different with DF95 and IOM skippers sampling cool shifty breezes and spirited competition. The DF 95 fleet started shortly after noon in highly unpredictable breeze in the 2-6mph range. Medium and short courses were called by RD Kim Robins. Six heats and lots of fun!

We had a comfortable attendance on our IOM starting line. Dave Woodward traveled from Arizona to jump into the action and it was great sailing with him. The wind increased a notch or two for the six IOM heats, but substantial shifts still snagged most skippers. Scott Harrison managed the honor of RD and ran medium and short courses.. Great Sailing Guys!

Mar.25 Points-DF95 & IOM

It was a cool but beautiful day for sailing on Mission Bay Model Yacht Pond! Winds started out a little on the light side and out of a south westerly direction. Our robust DF95 Fleet started their six race series just after noon, sailing a modified medium course. Fred Rocha, our DF95-RD likes to keep us on our toes, so he changed our normal mid-basin reaching leg into an inside gate. It was a nice change to a course that can some times be a merry-go-round. Nice sailing skippers!

As the afternoon progressed wind pressure increased and shifted a little more to the right. The IOM’s had their turn on the pond and benefitted from the additional wind and a 2 lap course. The long course gives skippers just a little more time to chase down those boats up front! Chris Staiger did a nice job as RD for the IOM fleet, and we all appreciate our volunteers. Thank You!

Awesome drone footage of IOM Races 1-3.. Thank You Kerim Baran!
