I'm an active senior enjoying most all outdoor activities. Surfing, SUP, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Sailing, Wind Surfing and recently Wing Foiling. I also have numerous hobbies that include Photography, Videography, RC Sailing and Gardening. When I am not exhausted I'll spend time repairing most everything around the house.. What a fantastic way to kick off the 2021 Summer Sailing Season! Conditions could not have been any more challenging for a full afternoon of non stop competition. The pond wind gods (or demons) delivered an entire banquet of conditions during the 12 race series. The first 4 races the wind seemed hopeful but down right puffy and shifty. Middle heats sailors were served telltale teasers that just barely satisfied a craving to move. By late afternoon the big wind finally filled in and everyone was on their rails. Fun conditions and a very competitive fleet. Our protest station was vacant as any rule infractions were settled with sorries and turns. Nice racing!
Fred Rocha and Greg Williams deserve a standing ovation for promoting, organizing and executing a perfect regatta. RD Fred set the marks and called the days courses with NCR precision. Sailors had lots of water to navigate with a comfortable starting line near the east end of the pond. Offset windward marks on the far west shores. A leeward gate all the way to the east shore and a mid basin offset that also served as a finish line. Great Course!
We had a great turnout of ODOM skippers with varied skill levels. They all seemed to get along on the water with few fouls. Thank you all for your Corinthian Spirt! Check out the scores.. One point separating first place Ken Campbell and second place John Castelli who “claims” this was his first race in 2 years! Our less experience sailors learned a lot today and had a chance to sail with the best. Congratulations and thank you for your participation!

It was a cloudy kind of cool May gray day the wind ranged between 0-9mph from the wsw x w x sw x nw x w x s x straight down. The turnout was decent 5 IOM’s and 13 95’s. For the most part the sailing was fair, only a few people missed taking a turn when they should, have hopefully they will fix that in the future. I want to send a huge vote of thanks out to Gil, Pat, and Ken for their help. Without people that step up we’re sunk! Kim 5/15 RD

“I had the pleasure of being the RD today for the first day back to points racing in some time. It was good to be back in racing spirit today. First on today’s agenda was spending some time training some new volunteers to do some RD work in the future. Pat Nevitt and Steve Delvin were my assistants today, and both did a fantastic job in helping to sort out the marks, set them, call the start line, call the contacts to weather, and of course score the races.”
The ODOMs were next, and they two had 6 races and the clock was moved back to 2 mins. Again there was some good racing here, unfortunately Kim had to drop out before wetting the hull due to a break. A couple of races were close, but if an odom got out in the lead at the weather it was usually in the top two for sure.
A lot of port starts or immediate tack to port after starting was the theme of the day. The wind was heavily port favoring and I believe we had one boat, having been called over and last to start, played the port favoring perfectly to round the Windward marks clear ahead of the fleet. The usual holes of wind flustered a few skippers, and hence the wind from Mars comment, as it seems the water was moving but the boat wasn’t. :o)
In all it was a good day back. And good corinthian sailing was done by all. And it was good to get some volunteers into the rotation soon. Oh, you are probably wondering about scores. Well that’s a secret. Nah, Mr Points Campbell is working on them and will announce the results soon.
Normal club operations are expected to resume this summer, depending on all pandemic restrictions being lifted by the county and city.
As sailors begin more frequent use of the pond we must to be aware and show respect to other users of our valuable resource. Saturday morning is reserved for Scale Division. Stay off the water until noon! Use common sense when speedy Power Craft are sharing the water. Practice the Corinthian Spirit.
Sail members will soon be given several choices for a new Burgee. Make sure you voice an opinion. These new colors could show up on your hat, shirt or bumper sticker!
We have a busy summer ahead with lots of fun Club Points Racing, Regattas and Race Week in August. (check the current calendar) We are going to need volunteers! Don’t be shy because this is going to be a lot of fun!

1. RULES AND GOVERNANCE:
The event will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020 (RRS) as changed by RRS Appendix E, this Notice of Race (NOR), the Sailing Instructions (SI), the International One Meter Class Rules, the current applicable Heat Management System (HMS) and the Equipment Rules of Sailing (2017-2020). The Sailing Instructions shall prevail in case of conflict with this Notice of Race.
1.2 COVID HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS:
Our primary concern is the health and safety of our competitors, race officials, volunteers, guests, and all involved coming together for a national level event. As such our Covid Concerns and Regatta safety practices include:
1.2.1 While the Organizers will be implementing reasonable safety protocols, each individual attendee must decide if these guidelines meet their personal minimums and make their own choices. If these practices below do not meet what you believe to be safe guidelines for you or if you feel believe these practices “go too far” and you do not intend to follow them then youSHALL NOT attend this event.
1.2.2 Given the Covid-19 global pandemic the Race Committee will employ several non- negotiable health practices at this regatta. Skippers who attend must follow these practices or they will be required to leave the event and will not be allowed to continue racing (with no refunds).
a) All involved are mandated to perform health screenings upon arrival at San Diego Model Pond water site.
b) Health screening must be completed at the beginning of each day prior to or at check in (gathering).
c) Screening shall occur upon parking your car prior to admittance to the racing area.
d) A second health screening will be required for all if the racing day should extend beyond ten (10) hours.

e) Health screenings are conducted by asking specific questions to check for signs or symptoms of respiratory infection and assessing body temperature.

f) Social distancing: Skippers will be asked to maintain social distancing (6 feet of separation or 2 IOM boat lengths) during the regatta if physically possible. When not possible, they are required to wear a mask.
g) In the racing control area, as defined by the PRO and race committee, masks shall be worn at all times.
1.3 EQUIPMENT INSPECTION:
1.3.1 All boats shall be checked by technical committee prior to racing in this event. • Boats together with their measurement certificates shall be presented for registration and
equipment inspection on Friday August 21st from 08.00 to 11.00. 1.3.2 All Equipment shall be inspected by technical committee before racing this event.
1.3.3 The Race Committee may extend the time for registration and inspection if there is a valid reason to do so.
1.3.4 No boat shall be eligible to race until it has been registered and has passed equipment inspection.
1.3.5 At the discretion of the PRO, checks of randomly selected boats to ensure that they comply with class rules may be conducted during the event.
1.4 FREQUENCIES: 1.4.1 No frequency conflicts will be allowed.
1.4.2 Permitted frequency bands are FCC-approved surface bands. Transmitters on 75 MHz must be narrow band certified. Radio frequencies will be allocated on a “first come first served”
1.4.3 2.4 GHZ radios are permitted and are exempt from rule E2.4 in the RRS.2. RISK STATEMENT:
2.1 RRS 4 of the Racing RRSs of Sailing states: “The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a heat or to continue racing is hers alone.” Sailing is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore involves an element of risk. By taking part in any of the events covered by this NOR, each competitor agrees and acknowledges that:
a) They are aware of the inherent element of risk involved in the sport and accept responsibility for the exposure of themselves and their boat to such inherent risk whilst taking part in the event;
b) They are responsible for the safety of themselves, their boat and their other property whether afloat or ashore;
c) They accept responsibility for any injury, damage or loss to the extent caused by their own actions or omissions;
d) Their boat is in good order, equipped to sail in the event and they are fit to participate;
e) The provision of a race management team, patrol boats, umpires and other officials and volunteers by the organizer does not relieve them of their own responsibilities;
f) The provision of patrol boat cover is limited to such assistance, particularly in extreme weather conditions, as can be practically provided in the circumstances; and
g) All involved in this event shall test negative heath screening procedures and expected to accept any government changes regarding this global pandemic (COVID-19).
3. ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY:
3.1 The regatta is open to all boats of the IOM class. Each boat shall either send in advance or produce at Registration a valid Certification Measurement Form and proof of current AMYA or their National Authority membership.
4. REGISTRATION AND FEES:
4.1 The fee for the event per boat is $65 dollars (pay by 08/14/20).
4.2 Entry form and fees must be submitted by August 14th, 2020. After August 14th, the registration period is closed. This is a requirement of having a proper skipper count related to managing Covid Health and Safety Protocols. There is no exception.

8.1 The Championship shall be raced and scored under the current Heat Management System (HMS).
a) Five races are required to be completed to constitute the championship.
8.2 Boats finishing in an incorrect heat will not be allowed to sail in their assigned heat for that race and will be scored DNS for their correct heat.

WORLD SAILING, IRSA, IOM ICA, AMYA, USA IOM NCA, the hosting Model Yacht Club, Regatta Staff and any other parties involved in the organization of this event disclaim any and all responsibility whatsoever for loss, damage, injury or inconvenience that might occur to persons and goods, both ashore and on the water as a consequence of entering or participating in the event covered by this Notice of Race.
10.3 At all times the responsibility for the safety of their boat and themselves including the decision to participate or continue shall rest with the competitors. By entering this event, it is deemed that you accept these conditions. Competitors are advised to ensure that they have adequate insurance that provides coverage for public liability and their possible injury in the Country and County of this event.

11.1 Personal Sail Numbers will take precedence if numbering conflicts arise until 10 days prior to the skipper’s meeting.

15. CONDUCT:
15.1 Poor competitor behavior can reflect negatively on the sport, and all competitors are advised that their actions will be under scrutiny by race officials. In the event race officials witness any behavior, which they deem to be a breach of good manners or sportsmanship, or which may bring the sport into disrepute, the Principal Race Officer assisted by race officials will protest the party (or parties) in accordance with RRS 2 or 69.1.
15.2 The PRO, all race officials and observers have been directed to record any incidents, which will be dealt with to the full extent available to the Protest Committee. Penalties available to the Protest Committee include exclusion from the race in question or subsequent races, exclusion from the regatta, or other action within the Committee’s juridiction.
16. MEDIA RIGHTS:
16.1 Competitors, owners of the boats and their guests are giving all rights for using pictures and videos of persons and boats during the regatta in medias, including commercials, press materials and all other promoting activities and press releases, unless it is notified by writing before submitting entry.
17. INTERNATIONAL:
17.1 All involved arriving in the county from international locations identified on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Warning Level 2 or 3 Travel Advisory (available at: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices) shall be subject to 14-day home or other suitable location quarantine and self-monitoring before racing.
18. DEFINITIONS
The following words and phrases have these definitions in this interpretation.
Shall or may: In this document, the word “shall” specify a mandatory action or procedure, while the word “may” be permissive.

SAIL BAGS
Fellow Sailors,
Don Lair, one of of our local pond enthusiasts, boat repair experts and local sail maker, just informed me that he is now making custom sail caddies.
I checked out the quality of his work last Friday. The bags are made of high quality sail making materials from the North Sails and constructed and sewn to last.
Don can make the bags for any class sailboat from DF95 to IOM. If you need a bag for A,B,C rigs or custom handles or hangers he can do that as well.
Prices vary depending on size of rig and complexity.
With the recent changes in the USA IOM calendar and leadership we were thrilled to be able to continue our annual Mid-Winters Regatta here in San Diego. This year was well attended with 24 Skippers signing up with 23 on the line during the first day of racing. But, let’s back up a little.
Due to scheduling the Mid-Winters event was hosted for only 2 days with an added practice day on, yep, Valentines Day, February 14th. This included – bring your M and your IOM for racing and practice as you desired. The boat house was open to pre-tech in your IOM for the event. On the 14th – 7 boats were registered in and there were about 10-15 skippers on the water practicing. A basic course was laid out in advance of the competition to facilitate this practice day. My thanks go out to Bill Bridge for assisting me this day.
First day of racing was started late morning, as of course the remaining 16 boats had to be weighed and checked. For the morning time – Bob Hirsch was on hand with a drill to help get the weigh in started, and David Woodward assisted with the tables and chairs and setup (as well as breaking down the day) which helped get everything ready for an 11:30am start. And we also said a very Happy Birthday to Larry Grant this day!
Winds were best described as out of the west / north west and mostly gusty between 6 to 10kts. With some higher gusts from time to time. Seeding racing went quickly and the two fleets started in earnest shortly thereafter. Skippers were mostly Californian in origin with some other skippers from Seattle region also gracing our shores. Also in attendance were a few guys out of Arizona, Canada and Virginia. Early racing saw some exchanges of first place between Mark Gollison and Denis Rogers with just one point between them at days end of 9 full races. Close on their heels were Craig Mackey, Gary Boell, and Michel Roure.
Day 2 was much the same weather fo about 67 degrees and sunny with much of the same winds. Skippers were able to get started a little sooner this day and racing started with 10B. Only two protests went to committee during the event with most squabbles handled quickly on the water. Racing continued until 3pm as planned with a total of 16 races completed in total. We want to thank everyone who came out and attended our event and who helped to make it successful. It was nice to see a couple of brand new skippers giving it a go and a big thank you to all who traveled for the event. And without further ado, here are the final standings:
