Mar.25 Points-DF95 & IOM

It was a cool but beautiful day for sailing on Mission Bay Model Yacht Pond! Winds started out a little on the light side and out of a south westerly direction. Our robust DF95 Fleet started their six race series just after noon, sailing a modified medium course. Fred Rocha, our DF95-RD likes to keep us on our toes, so he changed our normal mid-basin reaching leg into an inside gate. It was a nice change to a course that can some times be a merry-go-round. Nice sailing skippers!

As the afternoon progressed wind pressure increased and shifted a little more to the right. The IOM’s had their turn on the pond and benefitted from the additional wind and a 2 lap course. The long course gives skippers just a little more time to chase down those boats up front! Chris Staiger did a nice job as RD for the IOM fleet, and we all appreciate our volunteers. Thank You!

Awesome drone footage of IOM Races 1-3.. Thank You Kerim Baran!

MAR18-IOM & DF95 Points

Today skippers were greeted to 5-8 mph breezes and warm sunny skies. A nice respite from the many days of rain and cool weather we have been experiencing.

Sean O’Connor, our IOM RD, has mastered the skiff, oars and and mark setting. We truly appreciate each volunteer and are eager to train others. Bob Williams stepped up and managed the DF95 races. Thank You Bob!

Thank You Kerim Baran for todays drone footage..

Thank You Pat Nevitt for prompt score cards! I hope that rudder servo is ready for action next week!

ATTENTION IOM & DF95 SKIPPERS

Saturday, March 25 is a make up race for our February rain out.

Smooth Sailing, Gil

March 4 -Soling 50 & ODOM Points

It seems as though a commonly used word at the pond this winter has been the word “COLD”! I believe most of us are pretty much done with it and ready for some warm spring weather. Light southwest winds and thick marine layer is how we started March 4 Points sailing. Luckily some sunshine provided subtle warming as the afternoon progressed.

VC Sail, Steve Ross cracked open the shed, greeted todays skippers and introduced our Race Director, Dennis Rogers. A non eventful skippers meeting was held and a fleet of 10 Soling 50 were on the clock, promptly at noon. Our medium courses was pretty much the norm. Larry Grant, a national Soling 50 champ showed us all how to navigate the race course. Nice sailing to all!

Special thanks to Pat Nevitt for expedited and accurate score cards. We all appreciate our updated scores!

Our ODOM fleet seems to be shrinking! Calling all ODOMS!!  It is a long season and a big starting line . There is plenty of time to join in on the fun!

Special thanks to our volunteers Dennis Rogers, RD and Jason Brooks for assisting with marks, scoring and cleanup.. We could not do this without your help and commitment! Thank You!

Midwinters 2023

The San Diego Argonauts are hosting their annual Region 6 Midwinters IOM Regatta this weekend and welcomed a talented group of skippers from across the USA, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Barbados. On Friday we also had the opportunity to host a blossoming Southern California Marblehead fleet with a one day Regatta. Twelve Races were run and it was a delight to witness these sleek fast yachts on our pond.

IOM MIDWINTERS-DAY 1

Despite ominous weather predictions regarding a large cut off low pressure system wandering off our Southern California coast, skies were sunny and we experienced a perfect winter day in San Diego. Winds were a little slow to get going but once the on shore began, light sea breezes lasted through late afternoon. A good day of challenging sailing!

DAY 1 RACE FOOTAGE-Thank You, Dan Shier

Stay tuned.. More good sailing tomorrow!

IOM MIDWINTERS- DAY 2

As we waited for a more prevailing breeze to fill in Fred Rocha presented Special Recognition Awards to our international skippers. Dan Mueller- Brazil, Tony Gonsalves- Barbados and Cristian Plaza- Puerto Rico truly raised the bar at this regional event. Special Appreciation awards were also presented to Dan Shier for Outstanding AMYA Promotion, Derek Landeau- Technical Chairman and Doug Hart- Protest Chairman.

Our beautiful sunny morning was quickly replaced by an upper cloud deck that blanketed our bay. South winds that had plagued us earlier finally shifted right. Heat Number Five-A Fleet started mid day in a light SW 4-5 mph breeze. That said, the entire day winds were light and variable with huge holes and all fleets were challenged. Fred Rocha, determined to completes as many heats as possible, shortened, adjusted and shifted the marks as winds clocked back to the left. GREAT JOB FRED!

Last Heats of the day. The temperature drops.. The winds drop.. and light rain drops..

Feb. 4, Sail Points-ODOM & Soling 50

Skippers could not have asked for a nicer day of February sailing! Plenty of sun, a few picturesque high clouds and pleasantly mild temperatures. I had anticipated the winds would have been steadier, with an early clearing and onshore flow. That certainly was not the case. Squirrelly would be the best word I could use to describe our pond today. Light variable pressure with an 8mph puff here and there. Challenging!

Volunteers that made today possible:

  • Steve Delva – Race Director
  • Gil Jansky – Mark Setting
  • Steve Ross- Scoring Assistant
  • Ken Titilah – Skiff Cleanup
  • Pat Nevitt – Score Keeper

ODOM Skippers filled the pond first with a fleet of seven. Unfortunately we had a few technical problems that thinned the fleet a little. Check those lines and wires! We need to keep our fleets healthy. Thanks to our good group of skippers we sailed with few fouls and a fun competitive spirit. Nice Sailing!

Ken, Jess and Kim making it go!

The Soling 50 fleet had their shot on the course with a fleet of 10 boats. Wind conditions remained variable and even lighter, so short course rounding became the standard. Great sailing guys!

JANUARY 2023

It is almost the end of the month and I am way behind on my updates.. Yikes! We have had a busy start of the year with new membership and renewals, 2023 Points Races and planning for a long awaited and well deserved Awards Banquet and Trophy Presentation.. Let’s get started.
LUNCH BREAK
Saturday, January 7 began the first Points Racing of the new year. A truly beautiful San Diego winter day greeted Soling 50 and ODOM skippers eager to improve their skills and scores. Extra light winds in the 3-5 mph range prevailed throughout the afternoon so fleets were assigned short courses. Despite the very light conditions competition was tight at the top of the fleets. Unfortunately ODOM skippers had to scrap the last race of the day due to drifting conditions.

Course wrangling and skiff clean up-Tom Warren
January 14 was scheduled for DF95 and IOM fleets to kick off their 2023 points season. Mother Nature had other ideas with heavy rain and wind in the forecast. Our master VC of Sail, Steve Ross, got us all off the hook early after a number of motivational messages from reluctant skippers. It rained for 3 or 4 days and San Diego received A LOT of rain. IOM and DF95 fleets were rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28.

FINAL SCORES FOR 2022

__________________________

January 28 Points- IOM & DF95

Please don’t be fooled by these beautiful sunny images. A cool grey coastal marine layer dominated most of our day.

Bob Williams was our volunteer RD for the IOM and DF95 fleets. Thank You BOB!

Special recognition to the volunteers that made our racing today possible.

  • Steve Ross-Scoring Assistant
  • Pat Nevitt- Score Keeper
  • Chris Staiger- Marks & Skiff Cleanup

Fred Rocha manned the skiff and set numerous creative course situations. Pesky light south wind forced a skinny upwind leg for the IOM heats. DF95 skippers benefited by a moderate shift of breeze to the SW. Fred moved marks, once again, for sailing a more standard course for our pond.. Believe it or not-The sun was not out this much. Thank You Fred!

See the marine layer?

VC Sail- Steve Ross,

First, I would like to thank all of our volunteers for making Points happen for IOM’s and DF95’s. Bob Williams was the RD for the day, Thank you, Bob! Next, is Chris Staiger assisting with setting the course, also a Huge thank you to Fred Rocha for his racecourse management on a very challenging shifty wind that started with a light South East wind direction slowly shifting to South West. Fred spent most of the day in the dinghy and reorienting the race course with the shifting wind. Finally, I would like to thank Pat Nevitt for doing the scoring with a very quick turnaround on the results. Also, I would like to welcome Jess Atkinson to the Argonauts. Jess took everybody to school by winning the IOM and DF95 in a convincing victory in both fleets. Jess is a lovely guy with a wealth of knowledge of RC sailing.

Special thanks to our new members and all that participated today!

See You at the Pond, Gil

2022 Wrap Up and Outlook

The San Diego Region is fortunate to have an exclusive Model Yacht Pond that is not shared with large or small personal watercraft. A location with easy access to young and old, in a naturally quiet surroundings, with excellent conditions for Model Yacht cruising and friendly competition.
The San Diego Argonauts Scale Division and Sail Division had a successful year featuring events that promoted interest in the pursuit of Model Yachting. Each division has built on our fundamental mission of assisting those interested in R/C boat construction and maintenance, to enhance their knowledge of rules and skills associated with competition, and to promote friendly competition and good sportsmanship. We have a really good thing going on the pond and all members should be proud of our accomplishments in 2022. We are on a steady course and growing strong! Thank You to all that have contributed to our success!

Sail Points Dec. 10-DF95 & IOM

The Argonauts had a really nice turnout for the final Saturday series of the 2022 sailing season. Sunny weather held throughout the day with a surprisingly consistent west breeze in the 4-6 mph range. Each fleet had 6 races with the DF95 skippers on the water first. The starting clock sounded  at 12:05pm and the fleet was challenged to a medium course. Light conditions prevailed and fear the wind gods might abandon our pond, the remaining 5 races were assigned our short race course. Dennis Roger’s sailed a beautiful series finishing at the top! A great way to finish off the year!

Thank You-Race Management Volunteers

DF 95 RD- Gil Jansky

Scoring Assistant- Steve Ross

IOM RD- Scott Harris

Scoring Assistant- Paul Hart

Skiff & Mark Clean up- Kim & Gil

The IOM fleet had their turn on the pond with nearly identical wind conditions. Skippers chose sailing six races in a row in order to maximize wind and the expiring afternoon daylight. A few medium races and the rest short courses made it a good day on the water. Thanks to all our skippers today! We look forward to 2023 and a growing competitive IOM fleet.

See You At The Pond

Dec. 3 Points- ODOM & Soling 50

ODOM and Soling 50 skipper finished off their 2022 Racing Season with fair winds and weather. High clouds and filtered sun prevailed most of the afternoon as light NW seas breezes skimmed our pond. Dave Stong was our volunteer Race Director and efficiently managed 6 races for each fleet. Medium courses were the norm for most of the ODOM series. As the afternoon progressed and breezes became inconsistent Soling 50’s responded to the short course. Great fall sailing to close out the season.. thank you all that participated!

Borrowing the comment from Ken Campbell’s Email.. “To see how you finished up in the year-long Championship standings, you will need to attend the Awards Banquet on January 21, 2023.”

Nov. 19, IOM & DF95 Points

Today’s points racing had a respectable attendance with ten boats in each fleet. Skippers experienced warm pond-side sunshine and light onshore winds most of the day. Gerry Wold, our RD for both fleets, ran a tight ship. Skippers meeting was called at 11:45am and we were on the clock at 12:05 sharp. The IOM fleet was on the line first and completed 6 races with a mix of medium and long courses. Nice sailing guys!

A big thank you to our assistants:

RD: Gerry Wold

Boat Shed and cleanup: Steve Ross

Scoring: Bob Hirsch

The DF95 fleet jumped into the pond next with lighter wind conditions and challenging glare from the late afternoon sun. Courses were medium, then later modified to short with the fading wind. All six races were completed.
