In some neighborhoods green leaves are turning to amber and pumpkins baked into pies. With the shorter days ahead we look forward to trick and treaters at our doorstep.
I am certain, most will agree we are “lucky puppies” to live in San Diego where we can play outdoors year round. In October offshore breezes are frequent callers to our pond and teeshirts will soon be replaced with sweatshirts. A little light rain we will weather. But snow and ice are only imagined here.. So we sail on with a smile!
Thank You to Ken Campbell for informative rules clinics, diligent monthly scoring and accumulated 2021 scores. Thank You Ben Reeve for many RD duties that make racing on our pond fun. Helpful hands are always appreciated!

Thank You Kerim Baran for excellent drone footage and racing rules clinic video.
IOM and DF95 skippers enjoyed good breezes for our waning summer month of September. Lucky we are to have year round sailing on our pond! A special thank you to all participants and volunteers that contribute to the Argonauts success.

Updated Pond Calendar 2021
If you are an RC enthusiast, big boat sailor or just pond side spectator the San Diego Argonauts welcome your interest into our FUN and challenging hobby of RC Sailing!
The ODOM is our second featured class during San Diego Race Week. This craft has been a highly successful pond sailor due to it agile performance on the water, ease of handling and fleet popularity. This year our event attracted eighteen highly competitive sailors to our National Championship Regatta. All on the starting line at the same time!
On both race days mother nature sent us a wind package from southeast and south. So sailors experienced some of the most challenging and variable winds our pond can offer, testing skill patience and determination.

I scribbled this image in my airplane seat, just a week ago, while traveling back to my home town on Lake Michigan. My father was a passionate sailor and we were active in a very small Lighting fleet of 5 boats. I recalled the names of the skippers and the color of their boats. I remembered how everyone helped each other rig their boats to go fast and prepare for a fun day of sailing on the lake. There was a lot joking and playful poking. But everyone pulled together to make our little club better. Once on the race course it was all business. It was about getting around the course as fast as possible in a seaman like manner. In many ways the sailing was about pushing yourself to be better and having fun as a group. That was over 50 years ago. It is a special honor to be recognized with the Corinthian Award at the 2021 ODOM National Championship Regatta.. Keep Sailing-Gil
A special thanks to Ben Reeve, Bill Bridge and Greg Williams for their stelar assistance!
And thanks to our top gun pilot Pat Nevitt (and his instructor Ben Reeve for looking over his shoulder as Pat did his first flight) we captured ODOM Race #19 on drone footage, in a series of 4 videos.
RACE WEEK CONTINUES…
San Diego Argonauts Thank our Event Sponsors for their Generous Support of Race-Week Events and Activities.
GOOD LUCK and SMOOTH SAILING TO ALL PARTICIPANTS!!
We had a nice day of wind and good attendance for the SOLING 50 SUMMER REGATTA. The class had a 9 boat fleet all eager to earn a shot at the elusive annual chevron award. Competitive RC Sailing at its best! Our top 3 sailors at the podium today all earned that award! CONGRATULATIONS, 1st-Ken Campbell, 2nd-Gerry Wold and 3rd-Kerim Baran. Special recognition to Kerim for achieving his first Chevron. FANTASTIC..
Ok guys – If our friend Bob Williams can go twelve races on two bad knees and a pair of roller-skates – we just don’t have any excuses, do we! Thank you Bob for being our inspiration!
As always- a standing ovation to Fred Rocha for his leadership, support and enthusiasm.. Also a big hand for todays volunteers. Kim Robbins, Greg Williams, Ty Beach (Soling 50 Class Secretary) and Ben Reeves (drone pilot).
Just to the east of our little pond, by the wind graph above, you can see we had a typical summer day on Mission Bay. Then add resorts, pine trees, parking lots and other obstructions to the equation.. You get the idea.. This is a pretty challenging place to sail!
A HUGE Thank You and extended hand of appreciation to our Argonaut leadership. This would not be possible without them! Fred Rocha, Rob Wood, Bill Bridge, Sean O’Connor and our new interim secretary Al Waters. These are all volunteers pouring a tremendous amount of positive energy into OUR organization!
ArgonautCORINTHIAN SPIRT:
“It is such a pleasure to see a fleet of racers that are doing their best to enjoy these little boats and the racing. It is so cool that the few disagreements we have (mostly caused by the distance between us and our boats) are discussed and resolved with very little frustration. You all have a very special thing going. I would venture to say that it’s a bit unique.” Bueno, J. Rogers
Thank you to all the Argonauts that participated in todays races. It looks like, from the scores, we have some consistently talented sailors in our fleet that can really read the wind! Check out the cool drone video’s provided by Kerim Baran.

It was a cloudy kind of cool May gray day the wind ranged between 0-9mph from the wsw x w x sw x nw x w x s x straight down. The turnout was decent 5 IOM’s and 13 95’s. For the most part the sailing was fair, only a few people missed taking a turn when they should, have hopefully they will fix that in the future. I want to send a huge vote of thanks out to Gil, Pat, and Ken for their help. Without people that step up we’re sunk! Kim 5/15 RD
Thank You RD Kim Robbins.
Thank You Scorekeeper Ken Campbell.

Curious about the history of San Diego’s incredible Mission Bay Park? Here’s a glimpse into it’s original vision in a film called Aquatic Wonderland.
“1950s Film – AQUATIC WONDERLAND – Mission Bay Park, San Diego, CA. Promotional film for the newly improved Mission Bay Park. From an old Umatic video tape from Jack White’s estate, transferred from an original copy of the film sometime in the 1970s probably.” —peahix on YouTube
We’ve been given a fantastic indoor space, right in front of the entrance to the Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park. We will have access to the space for setting up, starting on Friday at 4:00 PM, and at 8:00 AM on Saturday, 9:00 AM on Sunday. We have parking, secure storage, power and restrooms, with a cafe just up the stairs above us. This will be a high-traffic area during the event, but with a perfectly-controllable, roped-in area along the busy thoroughfare. WE NEED BOATS AND SHIPS TO DISPLAY! You need not commit to the full weekend, or even a full day, but we need as many people and boats/submarines and ships as possible.
See photos below for an unloading map and a look at the space.
