Dec. 3 Points- ODOM & Soling 50

ODOM and Soling 50 skipper finished off their 2022 Racing Season with fair winds and weather. High clouds and filtered sun prevailed most of the afternoon as light NW seas breezes skimmed our pond. Dave Stong was our volunteer Race Director and efficiently managed 6 races for each fleet. Medium courses were the norm for most of the ODOM series. As the afternoon progressed and breezes became inconsistent Soling 50’s responded to the short course. Great fall sailing to close out the season.. thank you all that participated!

Borrowing the comment from Ken Campbell’s Email.. “To see how you finished up in the year-long Championship standings, you will need to attend the Awards Banquet on January 21, 2023.”

See You At The Pond

Gil

Nov. 19, IOM & DF95 Points

Today’s points racing had a respectable attendance with ten boats in each fleet. Skippers experienced warm pond-side sunshine and light onshore winds most of the day. Gerry Wold, our RD for both fleets, ran a tight ship. Skippers meeting was called at 11:45am and we were on the clock at 12:05 sharp. The IOM fleet was on the line first and completed 6 races with a mix of medium and long courses. Nice sailing guys!

A big thank you to our assistants:

RD: Gerry Wold

Boat Shed and cleanup: Steve Ross

Scoring: Bob Hirsch

The DF95 fleet jumped into the pond next with lighter wind conditions and challenging glare from the late afternoon sun. Courses were medium, then later modified to short with the fading wind. All six races were completed.

CARING FOR OTHERS

Wishing Pat a speedy recovery!

One of the most important things we do as as social club is recognize and help members and friends that would benefit from our thoughts and prayers. Patt Nevitt has been fighting health issues for many months. He has sailed and contributed to the Argonauts even when his energy level was low and he felt horrible. Likely, many of us didn’t even realize what he was fighting. Last Thursday Pat had major surgery and is now recovering in the hospital. Tom Warren and others have created a thoughtful incentive for Pat to make a speedy recovery. A picture board full of great memories and get well wishes from us all.. We are all pulling for you Pat!

2023 Officers

Commodore Mark Hallberg kicked off our meeting today with voting and a club consensus of our 2023 officers. Much appreciation should be directed to our 2022 board members that helped us recover from the dismal COVID years. Great Job!

Congratulations to our new Argonauts Officers:

Commodore- Tom Warren

Vice Commodore Sail- Steve Ross

Vice Commodore Scale- Rob Wood

Vice Commodore Power- Bill Bridge

Secretary- Steve Delva

NOVEMBER 5, Points- Soling 50 & ODOM

We are winding down the final 2 months of the 2022 Sailing Season and today we had a nice showing of Soling 50 and ODOM skippers. It truly was a perfect fall day in San Diego. The sea breeze was a little better than anticipated and ranged from about 2-8mph with shifting directions from W to NNW. Fleets managed 6 races each with mostly medium courses. Nice sailing today!

2023 IOM AMYA REGION 6 CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA

Smooth Sailing, Gil

OCT. 2022- DF95 & IOM Points

A pesky low pressure system fouled our wind and weather for our Oct 15 pond sailing fleets! Despite threatening sky’s and extremely variable conditions, determined skippers tested their skills and luck.

Our robust DF95 fleet sailed their series of 6 races first. Medium course was generally the rule until late in the series when things were shortened up due to a waning breeze.

The IOM fleet had their turn in the pool just in time for the gentle breeze to turn into barely a breath. Race one, the short course, was just about an all day sucker! IOM race two, a medium course, began in true ghosting conditions. With the lifeless fleet spread out and drifting the rain and thunder eventually finalized this race day. Most made it through the finish line and the IOM’s retired after two drifters.

This is Ghosting.. Appropriate for Halloween?

A Special recognition to our RD’s: Craig Mackey and John Roger’s. Also thank you Jason Brooks and Kim Robinson for mark setting and retrieval. Your help is appreciated by all!

Bob Williams fired up the grill and served up yummy hot dogs for deserving participants. Several skippers commented the BBQ was the highlight of the day.

See You at The Pond!

OCT2022 Points-Soling 50 & ODOM

A big thank you goes to Kim, Tom, Steve for assisting in volunteering as RD’s & helping out with the RD. duties. And thank you Ken for the racing results!

VCS, Bob!

Thank You Kerim Baran for documenting Ken Campbell’s Racing Rules Clinic:

The San Diego Argonauts also held an IOM Fun Regatta on October 8. I understand the event was a lot of fun, but lightly attended. I will post results and other information when they become available.

REMAINING 2022 SAIL DIVISION EVENTS

See Ya at the Pond, Gil

Sept.-DF95 & IOM Points

We had a nice turnout of sailors even though the weather service was threatening us with wind and rain, remnants of Hurricane Kay. Needless to say Kay was mostly a bust when it came to the velocities of wind that was predicted. I think we were all agreeable with the cooler temperatures and light rains the tropical system delivered to the pond.

Kay-Renant Low

Ben Reeve and Scott Harris did an outstanding job managing one of the more challenging days on the pond to be the Race Directors! The light early onshore flow clocked to south east and south with very low flow. DF95 skippers went first and drifted through the difficult conditions. The course became rather interesting when starting was reversed (west to east) with starboard gate rounding and long reaching legs. A wind delay held the series to 5 races.

Our IOM fleet seems to be growing slowly and it is was great to see John Castilli back on our local waters. Dennis Rogers tried out his new BritPop and he seems to be very happy! It’s a beautiful rig! When it was time for the IOM fleet to begin their series the wind spiked out of the south and south east. Reverse starting on a beam reach was the name of the game and it was fast action to the first starboard rounding gate. This was pretty much the theme for the six race series. Nice Sailing!

The drone did not launch last weekend due to missing software updates. So recordings were brief and from the sidelines. Thank you Kerim & Sean for the 3rd video.

AUG.20-DF95 & IOM Points

We had a nice turnout for both fleets. Eddy winds, everyones favorite (just kidding), was the theme for this Saturday’s DF95 & IOM points racing. Wind pulses, lulls and holes presented a veritable obstacle course that enabled all skippers opportunities and disappointments during their 6 race series. Thanks to all that participated!

DF95 Race Director- Greg Williams

IOM Race Director- Scott Harris

Prior to our racing schedule Ken Campbell offered up some useful tips on Windward Leeward Rights at the starting line and Proper Course at the weather mark, during his Racing Rules Seminar. Several followup questions on finish line right of way issues were also discussed. Thank you Ken.

Footage from this past weekend’s IOM Point Races captured in a series of 5 videos. Races 1,2, 4, 5, 6 were recorded. Race 4 was recorded partially (second upwind leg and beyond). Race 5 had some technical difficulties at the end. Thank You Karim for the extraordinary drone perspective!

The day ended with a fine Hot Dog BBQ prepared by, VC of Sail / Chef, Bob Williams. We all thank Bob for his ongoing support and enthusiasm for our passion of RC Sailing!

DF95 Summer Fun Regatta

A quick review of the fun regatta. Great wind most of the day and it was great to be in cooler weather than we’ve had recently.  As you can see 17 skippers showed up for a fun regatta. That was awesome. Our goal was to have fun and to practice our rules. After a bumpy first couple of races and getting everyone on board with hailing protests properly the regatta ran very smoothly and I don’t know about the skippers, but I think everyone had a great time.

Race Director – Ben Reeve

Welcome back Kerim! Thank You Hudson for superb drone footage..
Parts of Race #5 & #7

After the event we had Ken, Robert, Keith, Steve, Tom and others help put the equipment away and help with scoring. Awesome volunteering today. Of course the BBQ hot dog round table hosted by our VC of Sail Bob ended the event on high spirits.

Thanks to all who came out and made today a fun event!

AUG. -ODOM & Soling 50 Points

Race Directors- Dennis Rogers & Gil Jansky

Tom Warren & Kim Robbins- course mark wrangling

San Diego Argonauts launched into August points races with full summer conditions. Our pond, located right on the edge of the marine layer shield and sunshine, benefits with prevailing NW sea breezes.  Today, our warm small waters event provided 3-13mph conditions. (gusto) FUN!

The topic of Ken Campbell’s racing rules clinic focused on leeward gate rounding. Thank you Ken for another informative discussion.

Five ODOM skippers were on the clock at noon, under the direction of Dennis Rogers. Generously heeling ODOMS began their six race series with all medium courses. Great sailing guys!

Eight Soling 50’s were on the course next to what Chris Staiger described as “one of craziest wind conditions he ever experienced with his Soling.” Boats heeled from a dramatic punch from the right, then appeared headed with little or no wind at all on the bow.  I must say, Chris handled it well!

Commodore Mark Hallberg was on site, taking notes and joined the “peanut gallery” for some great camaraderie. VC Bob Williams held the group together with his untethered support and good old fashioned hot dogs after the day of sailing. Thank you all that participated!

See you at the Pond!
